San Diego, Calif. April 9, 2003—RF Magic, Inc., a global leader in consumer electronics radio frequency integrated circuits (RFICs), announces volume production of the world's first 1.8-6 GHz multi-band, highly integrated radio chipset for worldwide broadband fixed wireless access (FWA) service. Significant price reductions in consumer premises equipment (CPE) can be realized with this 2-chip solution that effectively replaces the RF circuitry in a FWA system design.
This RFIC chipset is already in field deployments of leading broadband wireless equipment manufacturers. The 2-chip solution supports modulation rates up to 64 QAM for both TDD and FDD radios, and is being used in OFDM, OFDMA, and single carrier systems. Applicable standards for the chipset include the recently released 802.16a specification, as well as 802.11a/b/g in outdoor applications.
"Low cost consumer equipment has been the missing catalyst for large volume BWA (broadband wireless access) deployments," said Mark Foley, CEO of RF Magic. "Our highly integrated, high performance, standards compliant RFICs enable low cost consumer electronics. And with our multi-band capability, we have gone a step further by allowing equipment makers to use a common radio design for multiple frequency bands, minimizing their overall cost for many product offerings."
The multi-band range of this chipset covers the PCS band at 1.8 GHz, extends through all 2 GHz bands (WCS, ISM, ITFS, MMDS), includes ETSI bands across the 3 GHz spectrum, and even covers domestic and international UNII bands from 5 GHz to 6 GHz.
"The FWA industry needs flexible, highly integrated silicon solutions for worldwide markets to significantly lower CPE cost," said Jeremy Rowe, Airspan Networks, Inc. Vice President, Engineering. "The RF Magic multi-band radio chipset is the leading implementation of this next generation FWA silicon."
Both the RF2000 transmitter and RF3000 receiver are dual conversion RFICs with fully integrated VCOs and synthesizers. Each comes in a 40-pin QFN package and uses a single 5V DC power supply. A 3-wire serial bus interface is provided for easy programming.
A comprehensive evaluation package that includes RF Magic's unique 1.8-6 GHz multi-band highly integrated radio chipset samples, line-up analysis tools, and evaluation boards is available immediately. Also, a complete radio design created by RF Magic's experienced systems engineering team is production-ready, enabling fast development of low-cost FWA consumer products.
