Agency Implements the Westbridge XML Message Server for Enterprise XML Web Services Management
Mountain View, CA (October 20, 2003) - Westbridge Technology today announced it has been selected by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as an enterprise technology partner and provider of XML Web Services Management (WSM) solutions. The FTC joins a growing number of Westbridge customers in the public sector that have serious demands for XML security, auditing, control, and reliability. The FTC selected the Westbridge XML Message Server (XMS) after rigorous, competitive performance and usability testing.
"The loosely-coupled standardized nature of web services that provides its strong functionality and promise also makes it ripe for attack," said Pete Lindstrom, Research Director with Spire Security. "It is gratifying to see the federal government taking an aggressive stance in defending this new architecture in order to reap the corresponding benefits."
Westbridge provides a rich set of security, management, performance and auditing capabilities demanded by government institutions. For the FTC, it was also the Westbridge Service View capabilities that differentiated the XMS from the competition. With Service Views, the FTC was able to quickly set up rules and deploy over a single weekend. Ease-of-use and administrative scalability provided a low total cost of ownership solution - an important concern for any government institution funded by taxpayers' dollars.
The Westbridge XMS will be used in a number of projects throughout the FTC to enable internal and external XML Web Services communication. Use of the Westbridge XMS will enable the FTC to communicate seamlessly and securely with other outside agencies.
"We are pleased to provide XML Web Services management and security solutions to such an important customer as the FTC," said Kerry Champion, president and founder of Westbridge Technology. "Government institutions have very high security, auditing and manageability requirements -- our work during early 2002 with Global 1000 and Public Sector design partners is paying off by enabling us to provide practical and highly relevant solutions to the industry. By leveraging Service Views, our customers are able to gain security, interoperability and management control without adding any code or modifying their services."
About Service Views
Westbridge Service Views enable enterprises to publish upgraded representations of different Web Services. The XMS Service Views provide some of the following benefits to Westbridge customers:
Security - Enforces security controls for each message
Service Upgrades - Seamlessly upgrading your services
Interoperability - Presenting interfaces that match different Web Service clients
Service Management - Hides complexity from the user by presenting business services
Service Views greatly ease the process of assembling a true Services Oriented Architecture (SOA), enabling loosely-coupled standards compliant XML application networks. With the Service View approach administrators can take a Web Services non-compliant interface and transform it into business services that are fully standards-compliant and support the specific security and communication mechanisms required by multiple target audiences.
About The Federal Trade Commission

To ensure the smooth operation of our free market system, the FTC enforces federal consumer protection laws that prevent fraud, deception and unfair business practices. The Commission also enforces federal antitrust laws that prohibit anticompetitive mergers and other business practices that restrict competition and harm consumers. Whether combating telemarketing fraud, Internet scams or price-fixing schemes, the FTC's primary mission is to protect consumers. In addition, the Commission conducts economic research and analysis to support its law enforcement efforts and to contribute to the policy deliberations oft the Congress, the Executive Branch, other independent agencies, and state and local governments.
